Dead Man Waking is the story of Eddie Wilkins, prison bound, heroin addicted and caught in a life that has consumed him. Riding fast Harleys and running with outlaw gang members has captured all of Eddie's passions. Outwardly and by all appearances Eddie is one seriously messed up dude and a total scumbag but right from the start of the story you sense that as a protagonist there are a number of qualities in Eddie that make you cry out for his redemption. Eddie has a heart and it is the philosophical observations Eddie makes as he goes through his life that will endear him to the reader. Dead Man Waking is a fast read that fulfills the curiosity about the darker side of life while at the same time engenders a sense of hope and the feeling that you really want to know what is going to happen to Eddie next. Eddie represents a demographic. He is the guy doing life in prison in a maximum security facility, he is the guy who overdosed on heroin so his buddies threw his body in a dumpster, he is the guy who used to be a gunslinger but is now toothless and pushing a shopping cart down the street talking to himself. He is the young girl who was viciously molested by someone she trusted and ended up in a life of drug addiction and prostitution. But also Eddie is the guy who fought through and found forgiveness, grace and love in God and emerged from his own personal hell to a life of victory.

Like many others, I fell in love with Eddie while reading the book. I really found myself rooting for him. I got more understanding as to why so many people fall into the self-destructive lifestyle like Eddie's. I fell in love with many of the characters in the book and was rooting for them as well. I found myself wondering what ever happened to Hope and Faith especially. This book was a quick read and I loved the stories from the 60's and 70's.One thing that is maddening with this book is the lack of editing. GOOD GRIEF. The spelling errors (George Straight instead of George Strait, for example), the lack of punctuation, etc. was downright maddening. It was obvious that no one did an edit job on this book at all.
I might or might not pick up Dead Man Waking #2 when it comes out. I don't think Eddie meets with a very good outcome (saw it on NY Ink)so I might want to leave that part out and just remember Eddie for what he was in the first one.

Awesome and engrossing. This book kept my enthralled from the very first page and I was not able to put I down. I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone looking for a terrific read.
Being i was growing up in the 70's i could relate to everything Eddie was living. This book is a fantastically written book that holds you in its grips so you cant put it down. Take this flashback journey with this lost boy through the hills of Hollwood to the beautiful Orange County Laguna beaches.Eddie's life took him through the inticing world of drugs, relationships and great losses. I know the author very well and know that he is an awesome man of God and a rad friend to have. All i can say is ya gotta read this book, Im even ordering another for someone i know in prison who i know will be totally touched by this book!!!

Pete Cropsey has put out an excellent book here. Eddie Wilkins is a hard man, a drug addict, and is living outside the law... but there's a glimmer of hope burning inside him... a voice that calls out to him, calling him back to a Father's embrace. Engaging and well-written, in a style reminiscent of the writings of Edward Bunker.
**And just a note. A previous review here complains of a "lack of editing". Not true. There were some minor things, but don't let them take away from what the story so generously spills out. Great work Mr Cropsey! Looking forward to part 2.
Eddie Wilkins is an anomaly. The troubled and drug-addled young thug seems contrary to the sun kissed locale of south Orange County that spawned him during the free love mentality of the late 1960's. Even more paradoxical is that God chose Eddie and had a plan and purpose for his life. Dead Man Waking is the story of a bright, young man's decent into darkness and addiction, and his eventual transformation and healing through Christ's atonement and the guidance of God's Word. Eddie's story unfolds with a frankness and authenticity that keeps the reader interested and engaged and also sheds light on the events and circumstances that produce many of the lost children in our society. Peter Cropsey has interspersed his book with elements of great story telling unique characters, familiar locations, humorous and tragic plot twists, and a relevance to issues families are dealing with every day. Underlying the rollercoaster of Eddie's life is his desire to be loved and part of a family as well as his hope for a better future, which is something I think all readers can relate to.
